A 16-year-old motorcycle racer suffered a significant ankle injury Sunday during the Grand Prix in Florence.
Ambulance director Mickey Price said the teen wrecked during one of the day’s races and injured the ankle after putting a foot down awkwardly.
“So, it sounded to me like he had wrecked and put his foot down and then his ankle had just kind of folded underneath him,” Price said.
Initial reports suggested the rider had tire tracks on his back, but Price said medical personnel later believed the marks were abrasions from sliding across the ground.
“We think it’s from when he went down and slid,” Price said.
The rider was wearing protective equipment and reported no injuries besides the ankle. Ambulance personnel recommended hospital treatment, but the unidentified teen and family members declined ambulance transport and instead planned to go by private vehicle.
Price described the injury as significant but not life-threatening.
