Trumped by truth

To the editor:

In the June 5 edition of the Marion County Record, editor Eric Meyer wrote a very good critique of the upcoming election, “Make the GOP Great Again.”

The thing that amazes me and caused me to wait two weeks before writing a comment is that there has not been a single letter to the paper defending the Republican Party or Donald Trump.

What is wrong in a county that went for Trump by more than 70% in the last two presidential elections and whose county Republican chairman is one of Trump’s most ardent supporters?

What happened to writing a defense of the candidate, his past performance and his policies on vital issues like health care, taxation, climate change, education and all of the other challenges that face our country?

I think that the answer to my question is that with the Trump base there is no need to explain, defend, or intellectualize; just put on the red hat and vote for him.

Years ago, I was elected Wilson Township trustee for at least two terms. Part of my responsibilities was to store and set up election booths in Aulne.

I felt honored to be trusted with that responsibility and took it seriously.

Running in 2000 for state representative in the 70th District was another experience that brought home the power that “we the people” have in this country: to elect leaders to represent and govern us.

Trump’s failure to acknowledge results of the 2020 election, his attempt to overturn the Electoral College, and his “firing up” of a mob to march to the Capitol to desecrate the building, beat up police, and threaten to kill the vice president while Trump sat in his chair, watching it all unfold on TV for three hours and making no attempt to stop the insurrection, makes Trump unfit to ever hold any public office again, much less be president of the United States of America.

Parents and educators strive to instill in children accountability for their actions and statements and to accept the consequences of their actions. Trump has never grasped this basic principle.
