Trojans aim high for low scores

Staff writer

Hillsboro High golf coach Scott O’Hare is setting the bar high by having his six-man varsity squad aim at lower scores.

“I am challenging them to set a goal of having a team score of less than 350,” he said. “That would make us very competitive in a lot of tournaments.”

The team is blessed with four returning golfers who qualified at state two years ago, he said.

He has about 14 out this year for Hillsboro golf — seven boys and seven girls.

“I have had girls in the past, but it’s usually only two or three,” he said. “This is the biggest influx of girls I have had.”

Members of the team convinced girls who were not playing other sports this season to give golf a try, he said.

He expects good things from senior Paul Glanzer, who shot the lowest score the Trojans have posted in a tournament.

“He has seemed to improve every year he has been a member of the golf team,” he said. “I am hoping he can have a good senior season.”

Juniors Frank Wichert, Eli Dalke, and Rylie Daniels could be very competitive this year, too.

He is grateful to be able to coach a team after a year’s forced hiatus.

“I’m just excited to get the season stated,” he said. “And I’m excited to have the kind of numbers in the program because it means we have grown some interest in the sport.”
