Tour to focus on buildings' geology

Staff writer

A guided walk Saturday through downtown Marion will highlight geology seen in historic building materials.

Starting at 1 p.m., Rex Buchanan, director emeritus of the Kansas Geological Society, will lead the tour.

The tour will begin at the Historic Elgin Hotel, 115 N. 3rd. St.

The event is the second in Flint Hills Counterpoint’s humanities speaker series.

Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing for the one mile walk that will take place rain or shine.

The event is free, but reservations through Eventbrite (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/506523915667) are encouraged.

Flint Hills Counterpoint is investigating Marion County for a planned audio book.

Buchanan grew up in Rice County on the edge of the Smoky Hills.

After 38 years at the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas, he retired as director emeritus in 2016.

He is co-author of “Petroglyphs of the Kansas Smoky Hills and Roadside Kansas: A Traveler’s Guide to Its Geology and Landmarks,” and editor of “Kansas Geology: An Introduction to Landscapes, Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils.”

The tour is being sponsored by Humanities Kansas, the Kansas Creative Industries Commission, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
