Swimmers compete in Newton, head to Topeka

Staff writer

Marion and Centre’s combined boys swim team competed Thursday in Newton in the first swim meet of the new year.

In the 50 meter freestyle, Tristen Dye finished 15th; Arthur Thornhill, 19th; and Zachary Schlesner, 31st.

Dye was the only member of the team in the 100 fly finishing eighth. Schlesner finished 28th in the 100 freestyle and Thornhill placed 12th in the 100 breast stroke.

“The team did great,” coach Randy Carlson said. “Each of them proved that they can do the little things. We just have to keep working hard. That was our third meet.”

The combined team will be in Topeka this week, followed by Lenexa on Jan. 21.

“They are the two best pools and by far the best facilities,” Carlson said. “I can’t wait to see a much bigger improvement from the boys, and I know they will shock themselves. Those two pools are just designed perfectly for competitive swimming and often allows swimmers to swim their absolute best times.”
