Steve Sams
The family of Steve Sams, 76, Marion, who passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita after a long battle with cancer, will gather with friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion.
His funeral service, led by Pastor Carl Helm, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at Marion Christian Church. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Marion Cemetery.
Steve’s life began July 4, 1948, in Herington, Kansas. He was the oldest of five children born to Dewuain and Bonna Jean (Pretzer) Sams.
Steve was raised in White City. He graduated from White City High School in 1966.
Immediately after graduation, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Steve saw service in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 before being honorably discharged.
He was united in marriage to Diane on Dec. 5, 1992, in Abilene.
Steve spent most of his working career with several different railroads and had a few odd jobs in between. He retired from the K&O Railroad in 2013.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Diane Sams of Marion, and children Erica Folcik (and husband Mark) of Gulf Breeze, Florida; Tyler Sams (and wife Courtney) of Boise, Idaho; Cody Nelson (and wife Libby) of Lincolnville; Cory Nelson (and wife Emma) of Marion; and Casey Nelson (and wife Javyn) of Council Grove.
Additional survivors include grandchildren Saylor Sparks of Liverpool, New York; Kenzie Sams of Boise, Idaho; Caylen Nelson of Council Grove; Tripp Nelson of Lincolnville; Rope Uhl of Lincolnville; and Tandus Miles and Graham Tajchman of Marion.
Also surviving are siblings Linda McKenzie (and husband Eric) of Parkerville and Tina Radle of Durand, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Kay Sams of White City; brother-in-law James Webb of Abilene; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Leah Webb, and brother Russell Sams.
Memorial contributions in Steve’s name may be directed to Marion Christian Church.
