Short-term lake rentals approved

Two county lake houses were approved Monday for use as short-term rentals but not without discussion of a protest petition.
Planning and zoning director Sharon Omstead presented county commissioners an Aug. 25 planning commission recommendations that conditional use permits be granted for properties at 58 Lakeshore Dr. and 6 Jerome St.
Matt Meyerhoff had sought approval for 58 Lakeshore Dr., owned by his sister.
Planning commissioners recommended approval after hearing from Meyerhoff and Linda Judd, who lives next door at 57 Lakeshore Dr.
Judd was concerned about privacy and a large rock on the property line that she said could be a hazard to children staying at the rental house.
“We do have a protest petition that was submitted,” county clerk Tina Spencer told commissioners Monday.
The petition, addressing only 58 Lakeshore Dr., lacked enough valid signatures to qualify, Spencer said.
It had eight signatures out of 78 property owners qualified to sign it. Two signatures were not valid, Spencer said. For the petition to have been valid, it would have needed 15 signatures.
Spencer said the top of the form, where what was being protested should have been listed, also was blank.
Commissioner Randy Dallke noted that Judd had sent a letter to commissioners, and that neighbor Marty Sampson had appeared Sept. 6 to talk to commissioners.
Commissioners also approved a permit for a short-term rental house at 6 Jerome St., owned by Judy Dyer.
“It’s just very part-time,” Omstead said. “The property owners to the north are in favor of this, and the property to the south is vacant.”
Later in Monday’s meeting, commissioners approved addition of a culvert at 58 Lakeshore Dr.
