Salon county bought may not be suitable

A former beauty salon that county commissioners purchased for $160,000 late in June may not end up being a new home for the health department as planned.
Department administrator Krista Schneider told commissioners Monday that estimates for renovation, addition of storage, and making the property suitable for treatments to people unable to get out of a car totaled $693,700.
“I can’t see that spending this amount of money as a worthwhile project for the commission to go after,” Commissioner Randy Dallke said.
Schneider said she also had concerns about the location. People would have to cross a highway to reach it.
“No matter what we do, it’s probably not going to be the perfect spot,” Dallke said.
Commissioners gave no indication what they might use the building for if it isn’t used for the health department.
The county paid full asking price for the building.
County appraisal records place the fair market value of the 3,136-square-foot 2006 building and land at $77,390, less than half what the county paid.
The building formerly housed Silk Salon.
The county has been paying $1,600 a month to rent a portion of a building owned by St. Luke Hospital for the health department. The hospital has plans to make different use of the space.
