Resignations hamstring zoning board

Staff writer

After four resignations, Marion’s planning and zoning board doesn’t have a quorum and cannot make binding decisions until more members are appointed.

The board already was down one member when John Wheeler resigned in March. Josh Clevenger resigned just before the April meeting, and Dino Diaz resigned at the end of the meeting.

That leaves a seven-member board with three members.

Margo Yates, parks and recreation director for Marion, was appointed interim zoning administrator after former director Duane McCarty resigned.

Diaz resigned because he was put on night shift, Yates said.

Yates said the board has been dealing mainly with parking lots.

City administrator Roger Holter said city council members 14 months ago asked the board to make recommendations for changes to planning and zoning regulations.

“There’s been some dysfunction going on, but we’re staying on track,” Yates said.

After Wheeler’s resignation, Terry Jones moved up from vice chairman to chairman. Yates said she and Jones would meet Thursday to discuss the board and how to proceed.

Jones could not be reached for comment.

Still on the board are Darvin Markley, Jackie Crofoot, and Jones.

The board decides whether pending projects meet city zoning regulations. Its decisions can be overturned for cause by the city council.
