Marion won’t pass along higher electric rates

Although Kansas Power Pool electricity rates will go up $117,000 in 2022, that increase won’t be passed along in electric rate increases in Marion.
Marion city council members voted Tuesday to use utility reserve to pay a one-year increase in prices charged by KPP.
Members also voted Tuesday to change the city’s auditing firm from Swindoll Janzen Hawk & Loyd, which it has used at least 20 years, to the newly developed Loyd Group.
Swindoll Janzen is going through changes because of a retirement, city administrator Roger Holter told council members.
Scot Loyd, who has been the city’s auditor with Swindoll Janzen, is breaking off and starting his own firm in Galva.
Holter said Swindoll Janzen increased its rates each year while Loyd said his $21,500 charge would remain the same for at least four years.
In other business, council members:
- Adopted a new IRS mileage rate.
- Renewed memberships in the League of Kansas Municipalities and workers compensation insurance with Kansas Municipal Insurance Trust.
- Heard an annual report about Marion Land Bank and forfeitures to the police department.
