Hillsboro raises recycling, trash fees

Starting in November, the cost of both trash service and recycling service will be higher in Hillsboro.
City council members voted unanimously Tuesday to boost charges for both services.
The minimum residential trash service charge was raised from $12.75 to $14.75 for weekly pickups of one poly cart.
Additional poly carts will be provided for $7.50 per cart.
Additional pickups can be arranged for additional charges.
Recycling rates now are $2.53 regardless of the number of times material is picked up.
Charges will be based on the volume of recyclable material and how often it is picked up.
For up to 95 gallons per pickup, rates will be $14.75 for four pickups a month; $29.50 for eight pickups a month; $44.25 for 12 pickups a month; $59 for 16 pickups a month; and $73.75 for 20 pickups a month.
The increases are expected to raise an additional $54,400 a year to cover increased costs and help pay for a second residential truck.
In other business at the meeting Tuesday, the council heard that a Center for Entrepreneurship will be developed on the campus of Tabor College. Council members signed a memorandum of understanding with the college for it to be located at D and Lincoln Sts. in the former campus welcome center.
The center is to provide services to 10 or more community members, develop monthly education courses, operate a youth entrepreneurship challenge program, and start one e-community loan.
The city will provide a $5,000 payment for startup, then two payments of $10,000 each at signing and in January.
“It’s going to benefit Tabor. It’s going to benefit Hillsboro. It’s going to touch all those who use this center,” Mayor Lou Thurston said.
