“In Memoriam” listings are expanded paid obituaries, phrased largely as the family requests, and may include enhanced information or photographs that might not fit within free death notices.

Harold Johnson

Harold James Johnson Sr. passed away Dec. 4, 2025, just 18 days before his 102nd birthday, at Valley Manor Care Center, Montrose, Colorado.

Harold previously resided at Presbyterian Manor, Newton. The family extends their gratitude to both for the excellent care they provided.

Harold was born Dec. 22, 1923, near Sedgwick to Barclay and Minnie Johnson. He graduated in 1942 from Peabody High School.

Before joining the Navy, Harold married Edith Ilene Bundy on Aug. 28, 1942. They were married for 77 years before her passing.

With the Navy, he served in the South Pacific during World War II as a petty officer.

In addition to his wife, Edith Bundy Johnson, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Marion Waco, Imogene Rimbey, Mae Deanne Blankley, and Lois Rappuhn; brothers Richard Johnson and Eddie Johnson; and granddaughter Mona Johnson.

He is survived by sister Joyce Parsons of Las Vegas; son Harold Jr. and his wife Tina of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; daughter Carolyn Johnson and husband Dennis Kalfas of Citrus Heights, California; son Fred Johnson and wife Lynette of Grand Junction, Colorado; son Alan Johnson and wife Dee of Phoenix; grandsons Trey Johnson, Chad Johnson, Jason Alexander, and David Alexander; and great-grandchildren Jeremy Owenby, Nathaniel Owenby, Jacob Johnson, Isabelle Johnson, Alana Alexander, and Patrick Alexander.

Harold lived in the Peabody community a large part of his life and will be remembered as someone who easily made friends and enriched their lives in all seven of the states where he lived during his lifetime.

He will be remembered for his involvement in the Methodist Church, scouting, civic organizations, the American Legion, and Peabody youth sports among other activities.

A favorite pastime was baking all kinds of goodies, which he happily shared with all.

Harold was an avid outdoorsman. When he wasn’t camping, hunting, or fishing, you could find him on the golf course.

Early in his career, Harold worked with the Southern Pacific Railroad in California and the Santa Fe Railroad in Newton.

He served the public through the U.S. Postal Service with duties including city and rural mail carrier.

It’s not unusual to find at least one house on each block in Peabody where he decorated and beautified homes by painting interior and exterior and wallpapering. Towns in Iowa and Minnesota also benefited from Harold’s decorating skills.

In recognition of his contributions to the youth and beautification of Peabody, the Peabody Historical Museum fountain was refurbished in his name.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to his daughter, Carolyn Johnson, who will share with the other children. Her address is Carolyn Johnson, 7535 Prince St., Citrus Heights CA 95610.
