Harley Oursler

A celebration of life will be scheduled this summer for Harley M. Oursler, 73, of Newton, who passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at Newton Medical Center because of COVID-19.

He had fought hard to get back home to his loved ones, but COVID won.

Harley was born June 11, 1948, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado to Kermit and Edna (Butts) Oursler.

He served in the U.S. Army for several years and was honorably discharged in 1985.

He worked for the City of Newton for more than 20 years in the water department and retired February of 2021.

He loved to make furniture and has made a lot of the furniture in family members’ homes.

Harley was a true Harley- Davidson biker and loved to make wooden benches with his friend Michael Sechler of Hillsboro each year for toy runs.

Harley is survived by his wife, Pam, of more than 20 years of being together and marriage; sons Cyrus Oursler (and partner Tony) of Newton and Brett Schmidt (and wife Jennifer) of Topeka; daughter Anna Cook (and partner Ryan Albright) of Newton; grandchildren Amber Cotton, Leonna McKinney, Darius Cook, Max Annis, Hailee Annis, and Ozzy Hassenplug, all of Newton; brothers Frank (and wife Sharon) Oursler of Peabody and David (and wife Janet) Oursler of Peabody; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank-you to his nephew, Rodney (and wife Sammie Jo) Oursler, for always being there for him as he loved them both a lot.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Honor Cotton, who passed away of cancer Nov. 14, 2021.

After Honor had passed away, Harley requested in the event of his death to have the same type of service she had.

The family thanks everyone for comforting words, prayers, and support at this time. A special thank-you to Baker Funeral Home, Valley Center. The family appreciates all that has been done for it these past two months.

Condolences may be left for the family at www.bakerfhvc.com.
