Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper. A backup vehicle was assigned as Marion ambulance through most of the period.

NOV. 24

9:48 a.m. — A 54-year-old man who broke a Q-Tip off in his ear at Carriage Manor apartments in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

10:26 a.m. — A natural gas leak reported in the basement of a home near 210th and Jade Rds. was not found by Hillsboro firefighters. The homeowners’ natural gas supplier was called to investigate.

11:57 p.m. — An uninjured 73-year-old woman who fell at Marion Assisted Living was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

NOV. 25

12:14 a.m. — An uninjured 83-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

2:14 p.m. — A fire alarm at the Tabor College men’s quad in Hillsboro was determined to be a false alarm by Hillsboro firefighters.

2:20 p.m. — A ditch fire near 1st and Burbridge Sts. in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters, one of whom had reported the slow-moving flames.

5:02 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman, possibly suffering diabetic issues, was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, after a one-car wreck on US-56 near Quail Creek Rd. Marion firefighters initially were dispatched as well.

NOV. 26

5 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman having trouble with oxygen equipment at Parkeast Condominiums in the 400 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:10 a.m. — What may have been the same patient was transferred by the same ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:41 a.m.

6:51 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

7:40 p.m. — Fire reported to have been intentionally set without notification in a brush pile in waterways between Pawnee, Old Mill, 80th, and 90th Rds. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Peabody firefighters. They spent two hours trying to find field entrances to make sure the fire had not spread.

9:45 p.m. — A 54-year-old woman with stomach pains at a home in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

NOV. 27

12:47 a.m. — A 77-year-old woman who fell and may have dislocated her arm at a home in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Hillsboro was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:27 a.m.

11:55 a.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell in her bathroom and hurt her leg at a home in the 600 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

12:15 p.m. — The 54-year-old woman who previously declined to be taken to a hospital from the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro reported abdominal and chest pains caused by withdrawal and was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:45 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman with pneumonia and sepsis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:19 p.m.

9:58 p.m. — A 26-year-old man who injured his back several hours earlier was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from an apartment in the 100 block of W. Santa Fe St. in Marion.

THURSDAY

9:04 a.m. — Fire that destroyed a pickup in front of a shop near K-15 and 330th Rd. was extinguished within 30 minutes by Tampa firefighters. Durham firefighters also were called, but the call was canceled before they arrived.

11:14 a.m. — A coroner and Marion ambulance were sent to the 200 block of W. 11th St. in Florence after dispatchers received a report that a person died there.

4:01 p.m. — A 26-year-old man who felt weak and fell at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

8:43 p.m. — A 56-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a home in the 200 block of E. 7th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

10:13 p.m. — Upon arriving at St. Luke, Marion ambulance was told to take a 58-year-old man needing a surgical consultation to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:50 a.m.

FRIDAY

1:15 a.m. — A 65-year-old man with shortness of breath and atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:38 a.m.

4:30 a.m. — A 92-year-old woman who fell and hurt her hip and shoulder at a home in the 300 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

10:49 a.m. — A 57-year-old woman with chest pains at a farmhouse near 110th and Indigo Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:08 a.m. — A 72-year-old woman, dehydrated and not felling well at a farmhouse near 40th and Pawnee Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance, which arrived more than an hour after the call.

The call originally was assigned to Marion ambulance but was switched to Hillsboro ambulance at 11:47 a.m. after Marion ambulance became stuck in mud on Old Mill Rd. just south of 40th Rd. Peabody firefighters were called to extricate the ambulance.

7:22 p.m. — A 3-year-old boy with pneumonia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

8:38 p.m. — A 23-year-old with what was described as a major head injury was airlifted in critical condition to Wesley from a burning wreck in the 600 block of W. Potters St., south of the city park in Peabody.

Another adult and two children also were injured, one seriously. Radio transmissions are unclear, but at least one of them also was taken to Wesley by Marion ambulance.

With Hillsboro ambulance in Wichita, Marion and Tampa ambulances were dispatched along with Peabody firefighters, who initially were confused about the wreck’s location.

The fire was extinguished by 8:56 p.m. Marion ambulance arrived at 9 p.m. An EagleMed helicopter, hampered by difficulty in selecting a shared radio talkgroup, arrived at 9:26 p.m. along with Tampa ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded upon its return from Wichita.

All ambulances were back in their stations by 1:27 a.m. A state trooper was called to help investigate the accident.

SATURDAY

3:57 a.m. — A 55-year-old woman with pancreatitis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 6:12 a.m.

2:45 p.m. — A 73-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pain in her ears and eyes at a duplex on Victory Ln. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

3:59 p.m. — A 51-year-old diabetic man who hadn’t eaten in two days and suffered what a caller thought might have been a stroke at a home in the 1000 block of Marion St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded but turned around before arriving.

7:09 p.m. — After dispatchers had some difficulty paging the ambulance, a 91-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a farmhouse near 70th and Eagle Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded but was told to stand down.

7:43 p.m. — Contacted while returning from its aborted response to 70th and Eagle Rds., Marion ambulance waited until 9:10 p.m., after Hillsboro ambulance returned to the county, before transferring from St. Luke to Wesley an 81-year-old man, reported to be in stable condition after suffering a heart attack. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:54 p.m.

9:14 p.m. — Not yet back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to a duplex on Victory Ln. in Marion where a 73-year-old woman, who earlier had declined to be taken to a hospital, was having trouble breathing and running a fever. Marion firefighters were called as first responders, and Tampa ambulance was dispatched to stand by in Hillsboro until 10:24 p.m. in case of additional calls. Hillsboro ambulance arrived at 9:33 p.m. and took her to St. Luke. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:39 p.m.

10:42 p.m. — A 66-year-old man, possibly having a stroke after being hospitalized for a blood clot the day before, was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Francis from a home in the 200 block of N. Pine St. in Peabody. Peabody firefighters were summoned to help lift the patient. Tampa ambulance again was dispatched to stand by in Hillsboro until 11:36 p.m. in case of additional calls. Hillsboro ambulance returned to its station at 1:39 a.m.

SUNDAY

1:39 a.m. — What appeared to be the patient from Victory Ln. was transferred by Marion ambulance to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:18 a.m.

12:39 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhomes was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been caused by a cooking accident.

1:51 p.m. — A 78-year-old man experiencing weakness at Parkside Homes assisted living declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:06 p.m. — A 79-year-old man having an anxiety attack and trouble swallowing at a farmhouse near 190th and Pawnee Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

8:22 p.m. — A 70-year-old man who fell at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:16 p.m.

MONDAY

5:58 p.m. — An 81-year-old man who fell at a house in the 1000 block of Tanglewood Dr. was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:11 p.m.

8:06 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman with an obstructed bowel was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:39 p.m.

11:52 a.m. — Marion ambulance stood by but was not needed to evaluate for an emotionally disturbed woman at a residence near 1st and Santa Fe Sts. in Marion.
