Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

AUG. 20

3:32 p.m. — Marion firefighters informed dispatchers that a fire alarm at Marion Elementary School accidentally had been activated by a student.

AUG. 21

3:18 p.m. — A 67-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 200 block of E. 2nd St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro. A part-time emergency medical technician arrived before the ambulance.

3:31 p.m. — Two small grass fires in a ditch on US-50 near 80th Rd. were extinguished within 15 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

8:42 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was called to transfer a 35-year-old woman with a severe migraine from Salem Home in Hillsboro, but alternative transportation was arranged, and the call to the ambulance was canceled before it arrived.

10:13 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters briefly were alerted to a smoke alarm at a Tabor College dormitory in the 100 block of S. Birch St., but the call was canceled as a false alarm before they arrived.

THURSDAY

2:06 a.m. — A man in his 80s who fell and might have hit his head at Marion Assisted Living was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:29 a.m. — Two people injured in a four-wheeler accident on 140th Rd. just east of Aulne were taken to hospitals. One was taken on an emergency basis to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance. The other, a 70-year-old man, was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by at Canada until 1:13 p.m. in case of additional calls.

FRIDAY

9:18 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman whose son thought she may have suffered a stroke at a farmhouse near 160th and Indigo Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance mistakenly was initially sent to an address across the road from the woman’s home.

10:21 a.m. — A 50-year-old man who received an electric shock while working on a freezer at Dollar General in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

2:58 p.m. — A 79-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a home in the 200 block of E. Chicago Ave. in Lost Springs was taken on an emergency basis to NMC Health by Marion ambulance. An ambulance supervisor and a Tampa EMT in a private vehicle also responded. Tampa ambulance initially was dispatched but was told to stand down because Marion ambulance would arrive first. The ambulance returned to service in Marion at 6:24 p.m.

7:22 p.m. — A 67-year-old man who recently fractured his spine and found himself unable to move his right leg at a home in the 200 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Two incorrect addresses were provided before ambulance attendants received the correct address.

11:08 p.m. — A fire alarm at Harms Hall on the Tabor College campus was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm caused by a cooking mishap.

SATURDAY

12:15 a.m. — A patient taken to HCH at 7:22 p.m. Friday was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:36 a.m.

2:23 p.m. — A lethargic 77-year-old woman at a home in the 400 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:54 p.m.

6:17 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance attendants checked out a person who may have injured an arm at a food trailer at an event welcoming students back to Tabor College.

SUNDAY

12:16 a.m. — A baby, not eating and possibly limp at a rental home in the 400 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion, was examined by Marion ambulance attendants but not taken to a hospital.

10:10 a.m. — A 77-year-old woman, lethargic and running a fever at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to HCH by the county’s backup ambulance, based in Hillsboro.

10:30 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman who fainted, possibly from cardiac problems, at Aulne Bible Church was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded.

5:56 p.m. — An 83-year-old man with chest pains was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. A dispatcher erred and initially said the transfer would be from HCH.

7:39 p.m. — Immediately upon its return from Newton, Marion ambulance reported to St. Luke to transfer a patient to Wesley.

10:04 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still returning from Newton, Hillsboro ambulance and Lincolnville first responders were sent along with an ambulance supervisor to Pilsen for an 83-year-old woman having trouble breathing. Marion ambulance arrived after the first responders and Hillsboro ambulance and ended up taking the patient to St. Luke, arriving at 11:06 p.m.

MONDAY

2:22 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance initially was dispatched for a medical alarm from a residence in the 300 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro, but an alarm company called back before the ambulance arrived and said the ambulance wasn’t needed.

7:16 a.m. — At the request of a Marion firefighter, Marion ambulance was sent to the 100 block of N. Coble St. for an elderly man who fell and hit his head. The ambulance headed to Wesley before announcing that the patient’s condition had deteriorated, upgrading the call to an emergency, and asking the county’s backup ambulance’s, based in Hillsboro, rendezvous with Marion ambulance at US-50 and Indigo Rd. extended and add an ambulance supervisor to the Marion ambulance crew. A lone EMT aboard Tampa ambulance was sent to the Hillsboro ambulance station to stand by with another attendant there in case of additional calls. The ambulance director stood by in Marion as a first responder in case of additional calls there. Marion ambulance returned to its station at 10:09 a.m.

11:30 a.m. — A man with an unspecified issue was taken by Marion ambulance from in the back of the Marion Post Office to St. Luke.

11:43 p.m. — A 46-year-old man suffering from sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:24 a.m.
