Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

MAY 16

12:45 a.m. — An initially unconscious 48-year-old man with irregular breathing and a history of drug overdoses at a farmhouse near 150th and Eagle Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Goessel first responder and the county ambulance director also responded. Marion ambulance initially was dispatched as well.

8:23 a.m. — An automated medical alarm indicating that an elderly woman had fallen at a residence on Lakeshore Dr. between Cherry St. and Dan Dr. at Marion County Lake was determined by Marion ambulance to have been a false alarm. Deputies initially were dispatched because all doors appeared to be locked.

11:53 a.m. — Marion, Hillsboro, and Tampa firefighters and Marion ambulance responded to a report of smoke from an appliance at Last Chance Bait Shop near Marion Reservoir. The appliance was disconnected, and an electrician was summoned to check it.

2:48 p.m. — An 88-year-old man who fell at Marion Assisted Living was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

4:30 p.m. — A 71-year-old man with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:11 p.m.

6:46 p.m. — With only one paramedic ambulance in the county, a St. Luke patient was transferred by Eagle Med helicopter from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

MAY 17

12:50 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance responded to a call about a 76-year-old man who fell at a farmhouse near 240th and Indigo Rd. Monitored transmissions do not indicate whether he was taken to a hospital.

10:02 a.m. — Lincolnville firefighters stood by until 2:51 p.m. as a brush pile was burned at a location not monitored.

12:07 p.m. — A 71-year-old man with a fractured hip was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to its station at 3:02 p.m.

6:33 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were alerted to a fire alarm at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro, but the call quickly was canceled.

8:27 p.m. — A lethargic and perspiring woman in her 70s at a residence in the 100 block of N. Church Ave. in Goessel was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. Dispatchers initially sent Marion ambulance and Peabody first responders to Burns, thinking the call came from there, but upon learning that it came from Goessel changed the call to Hillsboro ambulance and Goessel first responders. The county ambulance director also responded.

10:15 p.m. — A Tampa firefighter reported a fire in a detached garage in the 400 block of Main St. in Tampa. Tampa, Ramona, and Durham firefighters and Tampa ambulance were dispatched, but the fire was extinguished by Tampa firefighters within 15 minutes, before most other units could arrive.

THURSDAY

10 a.m. — A 78-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and having trouble breathing at a residence in the 200 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was taken by Marion ambulance to NMC, where it was redirected by St. Luke. The county ambulance director also responded. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:48 p.m.

11:28 a.m. — An initially unresponsive 70-year-old man, later described as semi-combative, whom a neighbor thought may have had a seizure, was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro. Hillsboro firefighters were called to help control and lift the patient. Police helped arrange for medics to pick up a piece of equipment left behind at his residence.

FRIDAY

2:37 a.m. — Goessel, Hillsboro, and Peabody firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance were dispatched to a kitchen fire in the 300 block of E. Commercial St. in Goessel. Two teenage girls from the residence told dispatchers that an intoxicated, possibly suicidal woman in her 40s with a history of sleepwalking had turned on a stove, causing a pan of food to catch fire. She then reportedly removed a handle so the burner could not be turned off, barricaded herself in a bedroom, and refused to leave. Firefighters disconnected gas to the stove. They and medics asked for law enforcement to respond, as well, but two deputies took no action. The woman declined to be taken to a hospital. Most distant units were told to disregard the call before they arrived.

8:53 a.m. — An 82-year-old woman who fell and hurt her leg at a farmhouse on 30th Rd. between Indigo and Holly Rds. was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. A Peabody first responder initially was paged but later was told to stand down. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:23 p.m.

5:53 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman with slurred speech and labored breathing in the 600 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. A Peabody first responder provided initial care. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:22 p.m.

8:53 p.m. — A woman whose age was reported both as 67 and as 96 was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance after she fell at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.

SATURDAY

3:15 p.m. — A 60-year-old woman who suffered a seizure at Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:28 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman who fell and injured her shoulder at Parkside Homes assisted living was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:24 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred on an emergency basis to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:03 a.m.

SUNDAY

2:27 a.m. — An 85-year-old woman with shoulder and hip fractures was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC. En route back to Hillsboro, the ambulance crew sent word to Harvey County authorities about a disabled vehicle north of US-50 on what would be Marion County’s Indigo Rd. extended. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:32 a.m.

4:35 a.m. — Marion and Peabody ambulances and Burns first responders were dispatched to an automated medical alarm on behalf of a 100-year-old woman residing at a farm home near 20th and Wagon Wheel Rds. Ten minutes later, an alarm company reported that it was a false alarm.

6:02 a.m. — A 91-year-old man who fell and injured his hip at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:41 a.m.

MONDAY

2:37 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman who fell at Betheda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:25 a.m.

4:14 p.m. — A person who suffered what was described as a broken nose during an altercation near D&J Liquors in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Marion’s interim police chief, the sheriff, and the undersheriff all responded and went to another location to investigate with another person reportedly involved in the incident.

5:58 p.m. — Marion firefighters disconnected natural gas service to a residence in the 500 block of N. Coble St. in Marion where a strong gas odor was noticed inside. They continued to monitor the situation until an Atmos Energy crew arrived.

7:59 p.m. — An 18-month-old girl, not choking but with something caught in her throat, at a duplex in the 100 block of N. Jefferson St. in Hillsboro received first aid from Hillsboro firefighters and ambulance attendants but was not taken to a hospital.

9 p.m. — Peabody firefighters, rescue squad members, and ambulance and Hillsboro ambulance all were dispatched after a person complained of leg and finger pain after a minor car-deer accident on US-50 at Pawnee Rd. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

9:16 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman having trouble breathing in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters were dispatched to provide additional manpower.

10:34 p.m. — Marion ambulance returned to a rental home near D&J Liquors in Marion and transported to St. Luke a reportedly intoxicated and psychologically disturbed person who was lying on the ground and saying he was drifting in and out of awareness after suffering a head injury inflicted by a crowbar. Marion’s interim police chief investigated before the ambulance was allowed to approach.

10:48 p.m. — Without explaining why, a sheriff’s deputy took two people — a man and a woman — to St. Luke from a rental home in the 1000 block of Hudson St. in Marion.
