City launches contest to possibly replace its logo

Marion is now considering changing a city logo it has used in one form or another for a couple of decades.
The city is asking members of the public to create their own designs and submit them by the end of January to a city logo design competition.
“Maybe it’s time to do something fresher,” economic development director Megan Jones said.
After an evaluation panel picked by the city chooses a winner, it will be forwarded to the city council for their decision.
The designs should reflect the character, history and future of the city, Jones said.
Council members can either choose the new design or stay with the one that has been used for several years.
Even if the council chooses to stay with the current design, the best design will receive a basket full of local treats.
The city will present all of the logo designs to the public, Jones said.
“We are going to have a public viewing to display all of the entries to see how creative our population is,” she said
The city logo should be on an 8x14 piece of paper but focused enough to fit on a business card and be seen on a smaller scale.
They should also be short logos, with the Marion name in them
“We want them to be simple but eye catching,” Jones said. “We are not really doing anything different.”
Jones does not know when a winner would be chosen and how many people might come up with a logo design.
Entry packets are available at Marion City Hall.
