“In Memoriam” listings are expanded paid obituaries, phrased largely as the family requests, and may include enhanced information or photographs that might not fit within free death notices.

Christian Marsden

Funeral services for Christian William Marsden, 13, of Marion, who passed away on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the family who adored him, were to have been at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Pilsen.

Graveside burial was to have followed at Marion Cemetery. Afterward, the family invited mourners to join them for a luncheon served by St. Mark Altar Society at St. Mark Catholic Church’s parish hall. Meat was prepared by James Schlehuber and family.

The family greeted those wishing to attend visitation from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion. Rosary and a vigil followed at 6 p.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church.

From the very beginning, Christian was a miracle and a blessing. Doctors warned his parents, Matthew and Stacie Marsden, that he was unlikely to survive to delivery. But through God’s will and the prayers of so many, Christian entered the world Aug. 1, 2012.

Born nonverbal, with significant medical challenges, Christian defied every expectation placed before him.

Though doctors said he was blind and would never walk, eat solid foods, or communicate, Christian proved to be a fighter from his very first breath.

As he grew, so did his personality — bright, brave, and full of the sweetest giggles that could light up any room.

With unwavering support of his family, friends, teachers, principals, medical staff, and the Marion, Hillsboro, and St. Mary communities, as well as Holy Family Parish, Christian flourished.

He learned to communicate through sign language, took a few monumental steps despite spending most of his time in a wheelchair, and even learned to skateboard like a pro.

Christian’s happiest moments were spent playing with his big brothers, Austin and Cameron, and his little brother, Declan. He loved being outdoors, going to the zoo, traveling with his family, and experiencing the world in his own joyful way.

He was surrounded throughout his life by a large, closeknit family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents who cherished him deeply.

Christian also had a mischievous streak. He never cared much for wearing clothes and often preferred to be in a onesie or nothing at all if he had his way.

As his mourners lay him to rest, they find comfort in knowing he is with God, his grandpa Don, and his grandma Joyce — laughing, dancing, and finally free from the limitations he faced on earth.

His mourners are certain he has so much to say now, and they look forward to the day we hear all about his heavenly adventures and feel him guide us once again.

Christian, although your time here was far too short, your survivors are endlessly grateful for every precious moment. You brought immeasurable joy into their lives. You will never be forgotten, and they will celebrate you until they meet you again.

The simplest pleasures brought Christian great joy. He was a kind soul, a gentle spirit, and a truly special boy.

Christian is survived by his loving parents, Matthew and Stacie Marsden; his brothers, Austin Marsden, Cameron Marsden, and Declan Marsden; his grandmother, Diana Hasenbank; his grandfather, Richard William Marsden II; his godmother, Tillie Schafers; and many, many dear aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Donald Hasenbank; his grandmother, Joyce Marsden; and his godfather, Anthony Schafers.

Those wishing to honor Christian’s memory may make a donation in Christian’s name to the Knights of Columbus Counsel 3423 by dropping a check at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home. Please make sure it is made out to Knights of Columbus 3423. Or they may contribute it to the Father Kapaun Legacy Fund. Flowers can be sent to the funeral home

Christian’s sweet smile and kind heart, determination, and strength were admired by many. They miss you and love you always!
