Chili cooks spicy up competition

Saturday’s Chili Cookoff at Marion County Park and Lake brought 472 chili aficionados to taste test chili prepared by 13 competitors.

Thad Looper and Clayton Garnica won first place with “Slap Yo Mama” chili.

Second place went to Brent and Camry Cleeton with “Chuggwater Magic” chili.

Third place went to Larry Scott, who served “Red Dirt Chili.”

Brent and Kris Moddlemog won People’s Choice award for their Hawaiian-themed “Aloha Chicken Chili,” served from an eye-catching booth offering leis, straws with paper flowers, and cinnamon buns.

Janet Robinson and Linda Carlson, the Hot Mess Express team, won a Competitors Choice Award with their “Dam Good Chili.”

Nineteen competitors entered a car show during the event.

Best in class truck award went to Mitch Guetterman with a 1972 GMC Jimmy.

Best in class motorcycle award went to Kevin Hayward with a 2007 CVO Screaming Eagle Road King.

Best in class car award went to Jack Clanton with a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.

A cornhole tournament brought 27 teams.

Cody Delk and John Burnett came in first, and Greg Carlson and Doug Van Driel followed in second.

This year’s cookoff raised $2,360 for lake projects.
