Jerry Mullikin, who has been superintendent of Marion County Park and Lake since its opening in the ’30s, this week resigned that position, effective Jan. 23. His resignation was because of ill health.
A 52-pound beaver is quite a catch for this part of the country, but Wencel Vlk did it a week ago Sunday. Vlk has trapped five other beavers this season and has had good luck in catching two minks on Clear Creek. The mink pelts brought $48 for the pair.
Paul Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Roberts of Marion, a freshman at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, works part time as a news photographer for the college’s news bureau. He is a 1955 graduate of Marion High School.
One of the landmarks of Marion County is being torn down — a wind turbine built more than 80 years ago at Pilsen by Joe Vinduska Sr., father of J.J. Vinduska. Built in the 1870s, it originally was used to power tools in the Vinduskas’ farm machine shop and was in constant use until about 10 years ago.
Robert G. Reinke, Marion, and Lowell E. Socolofsky, Ramona, will be among more than 250 students receiving degrees from Kansas State College, Manhattan, at commencement Jan. 28. Socolofsky is one of 22 candidates for the Air Force Reserve and one of four designated as distinguished Air Force ROTC graduates.
