4th-ranked Hillsboro defies Friday the 13th jinx

Friday the 13th proved unlucky for county girls teams except for Hillsboro, which on Tuesday was ranked by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association as the No. 4 team in Class 2A.
The Trojans completed a perfect week with hard fought victories Tuesday over Smoky Valley Tuesday and in double-overtime Friday at Pratt, winning 48-47.
There’s nothing like a pair of grind-out games to strengthen a team for the remainder of the season.
The Trojans may have been tuckered out from Tuesday’s 51-49 victory over the pesky Vikings in Hillsboro, but they were able to survive a wrestling match with the Greenbacks.
“It was very exciting to get a tough road win tonight,’ coach Micah Ratzlaff said. “We were not our best and we could have done a lot of things better, but we found ways to respond when we needed to in a double-overtime win.
“Zaylee Werth carried us throughout the game, scoring 23 out of our points, 9 rebounds and 8 streals.”
Savannah Shahan added 11 points in a contest which saw Hillsboro survive shooting 35% from the floor while allowing the Greenbacks to shoot 40%.
The Trojans forced 19 turnovers to help preserve the win.
The victory boosted Hillsboro to 8-1 on36 the year.
Goessel loses by 25
The Bluebird girls could not crack a tough zone defense Friday at Canton-Galva and trailed 22-5 at the end of one quarter. The frustration continued as the Eagles led 44-17 at halftime.
Braylyn Hoopes scored all 14 of her points in the second half to give the Bluebirds some hope, but Canton-Galva continued to find high percentage shots and defeated Goessel, 66-41.
Hoopes led the Bluebirds in scoring with 14 points. Cheyenne Sawyer scored 10.
The Goessel girls are now 3-2 in the Wheat State League and 5-4 overall. They will have one non-league game this week, at home against Moundridge, on Friday.
Centre loses by 27
The Cougars managed 16 points against Elyria Christian in a home game Friday.
They trailed 32-8 at halftime and scored four points each in the final two quarters to lose, 43-16.
Olivia Carlson and Hailey Barton scored eight points each, accounting for all of Centre’s points.
Coach Alan Stahlecker didn’t have much to say afterward except to comment that Elyria is “a good team.”
Centre will be playing in its own Cougar Classic this week. The Cougars had a rematch with Elyria on Tuesday.
Marion loses by 36
The Warriors lost Friday’s home conference game against Inman, 53-17.
Calli Burkholder, Taryn Kraus, Kenna Wesner, and Scout Redger were the team’s leading scorers for the game.
“We played a good first quarter,” coach Jason Hett said. “We were active and made them work for everything .we handled pressure well and ran our offense with great looks,.
“After that, it was a struggle, and I felt like we lost energy and effort. This group has taken steps in the right direction, and we told them we are not going to allow this to take steps backwards.”
Marion will be in Centre this week for the Cougar Classic as the fifth seed, opening the tournament against fourth seed Wakefield.
Peabody loses by 52
The Warriors lost Friday’s home non-conference game against Wakefield, 62-10.
Peabody-Burns girls will not be traveling to Centre this week for the Cougar Classic.
“Having little to no subs, it’s extremely impressive how competitive we are, especially the girls,” athletic director Dylan Brazell said. “Our record may not show it, but the improvement that I’ve seen from this team is second to none.”
“These girls will forever be known as the girls who brought back Peabody-Burns girls basketball, and we are extremely grateful for that, and it’s something these girls can look back on and feel proud of when it’s all said and done,”
