Workmen from Abbott Construction, Salina, have moved inside the county jail for final construction work. Completion date for the project is July 1.

Max Tharp of the Aulne community is the only cattleman in Marion County who raises Longhorns. He’s been at it over two years and hopes to increase his herd from 40 head to at least 100 registered Longhorns in the next few years.

Three students at Centre, Kelly Jirak, Galen Chizek, and Stan Wyatt, have qualified to participate Saturday in the state Kansas Scholastic Press Association regional competition at the University of Kansas.

From the column, “Mr. PRIDE says …” that runs each week in the Marion County Record: “About 35 percent of the trees planted during recent years have been maples. If we continue to overpopulate our town with that species, we may someday be faced with the same problem we now have with elms — they may come down with a disease that would cost us a large percentage of our precious trees. Let’s keep Marion beautiful, with trees.”

Tom Hett was surprised and honored March 18 when fellow John Deere dealers from the area, and their wives, met at Kingfisher’s Inn for dinner to acknowledge his 25 years in business.
