Registered nurse Alice Goering was hired Monday by Marion County commissioners as health department administrator.

Central Park stage soon will have a plaque that reads “Central Park Stage, dedicated Sept. 30, 1989, in honor of the late Richard Brodhead, funded by Marion Community Arts Council, the City of Marion, Richard Brodhead Memorial, and many friends.”

Brodhead was involved in arts for most of his life in Marion. He ran a movie theater and worked tirelessly with school and community performances.

Marion city commissioners Monday hired Diane Hett as community facilitator. She will begin work Feb. 19.

Staff writer Rowena Plett tells how sisters Leona Richmond Hajek and Janice Richmond Waner serve on boards of education in their school districts. They also serve together on Marion County Special Education Cooperative’s board of directors. Both were raised to understand the importance of public service.

Physician Don Hodson has been nominated for the 1996 Kansas Family Physician of the Year award. The award is based on service to patients and community and devotion to family practice.

Chuck Maggard and Mattie Christiansen were selected Friday as Marion High School’s king and queen of courts at halftime of the boys’ varsity game with Sacred Heart.

Adult recreational basketball is in full swing in the area. The Marion County basketball league consists of eight teams that compete every Wednesday evening at the Marion High School gymnasium. Some games are played Sunday afternoons. Jim Darrow and Gary Hett, both of Marion, spearheaded the effort to organize the teams.
