Sen. Nancy Kassebaum addressed friends and relatives during Burdick’s annual Labor Day festivities. She spoke on the importance of small-town values and how small towns are havens from crime, pollution, and high costs.

Rebecca Richmond of Marion won the Nebraska pedal-powered tractor pull for 7-year-old girls Aug. 27. She will compete Sunday at Kansas State Fair and in nationals Sept. 24 in Omaha.

Thad Meierhoff, new owner / operator of Beaston Market, had an official grand opening Thursday and Friday and received a first dollar of profit plaque from Chamber of Commerce ambassador Casey Case while Mayor Gerry Harris cut the ribbon.

The 50th anniversary of the invasion of Europe during World War II was recognized at the annual Labor Day parade in Florence. A float included 12 crosses in memory of men from Florence who died while serving their country during the war.
