Thad Meierhoff will take over as owner of Beaston Market effective Aug. 1. Vernie and Jack Beaston are retiring after 26 years operating the store. The Beaston family has owned food stores in Marion since 1902.

A large sign stands next to the road at the residence of Carl and Juanita Stovall east of Marion. It says, “Elect Carla Stovall Attorney General.” Carla is Carl and Juanita’s daughter, and campaigning is a family affair for the Stovalls.

Roger Maag, a trooper in the Kansas Highway Patrol since 1989, has transferred to Marion County. A 1979 graduate of Marion High School, he previously served in Lakin and Wichita.

A feature story in the Southwest Times at Liberal tells how Marion native Gary Ewert, a teacher in the middle school there, uses non-conventional techniques to make history come alive for eighth graders. He has been named middle school teacher of the year at Liberal.

Scot Pollard, center / forward on the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team, assisted Washburn coach Bob Chipman at Marion’s annual basketball camp this week.
