The State Fair which commences at Topeka next Monday offers great attractions and will undoubtedly be largely attended from this section.

The Chase County Leader man can’t understand how Attorney C.W. Keller happened to have the $556 of which he was robbed, “unless he won it from Hoch playing poker.” Now, the supposition that he got the money from an editor is a very natural one, but the idea of a lawyer playing poker is absurd.

On Monday last, President Garfield was successfully removed from Washington to Long Branch, a distance of 260-odd miles. At the latest accounts the sufferer was enjoying the sea breezes and improving gratifyingly.

The “boys in blue” all over Kansas are organizing to attend the grand reunion at Topeka, September 15th. We understand that the old soldiers at Peabody and Florence are preparing to go in a body, and those in and around Marion Centre should accompany them.

The teacher’s examination last Monday was attended by twenty-seven applicants for certificates, of whom about one-third failed. Some of those who failed last month, however, came out all right this time.

In this enlightened age and in this civilized community it would seem that it should not be necessary to ask tobacco chewers not to squirt their filth upon church floors, but it is. That such a place should be defiled in this way and that ladies should be compelled to drag their dresses through such slime in a building dedicated to purity, is almost incredible, but too true. It would seem that instinct ought to be sufficient to prevent a man doing as nasty a thing as that.
