Marion City Council has agreed to provide a 10-year property tax abatement to help Jeremy and Tammy Ensey purchase the Elgin Hotel.
The city also has signed off on $800,000 in industrial revenue bonds that will be paid off not by the city but by revenue from the hotel.
Senior Kirsten Hansen, daughter of Andy and Staci Hansen; junior Devin Regnier, son of Doug and Michele Regnier; sophomore Sam Richmond, daughter of David and Bobby Richmond; and freshman Noah Kukuk, son of Matt and KayLeah Kukuk, were named students of the month at Marion High School.
John Wheeler, who finished just seven votes short of winning a council seat in this spring’s election, was selected Monday to fill a council vacancy created by the resignation of Chad Atkin, who is moving to Texas.
Fifth-grader Bradley Alexander was named artist of the year Friday during the annual Artful Eye Show at Centre Elementary School. Instructor Pat Wick said his peers made the selection based on someone who tried new things, consistently did good work, worked independently, finished projects, and had good concentration.
After hearing concerns from a flock of residents that Marion was too restrictive in allowing only six chickens per household, the city council unanimously agreed Monday to increase the limit to 20.
Snigglefritz Polka Band — including David Vogel of Hillsboro on trombone, Ralph Vogel of Inman on tuba, leader Steve Hanneman of Peabody on trumpet, Adolyn Bartels of Inman and Suzanne Thole of Marion on clarinet — performed Friday at a lifelong learning event at Tabor College.
