Weekly class to educate family cooks

Staff writer

Anyone interested in learning to plan, shop for, and cook healthy, low-cost meals can sign up for a five-week class that will begin Monday, Aug. 26.

The class, offered by Marion County Extension Office, will be helpful for families who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but Myrta Billings, nutrition counselor for the extension office, said any family is welcome to sign up.

The class, called “Eating Smart, Moving More,” will be a hands-on presentation and highlight the benefits of daily physical activity as well as healthy eating.

Billings said the class will teach participants about food safety, choosing more fruits and vegetables, meal planning, shopping, and how to check nutrition facts labels.

The class will meet each Monday Aug. 26 through Sept. 30 except for Labor Day Weekend.

Interested people can sign up by calling the extension office at (620) 382-2325 by Aug. 23.
