Weatherization help offered to homeowners

A program providing weatherization assistance for low-income homeowners or renters is now being offered by the South Central Kansas Economic Development District.
The program was previously administered for the county by a different agency, but has moved to SCKEDD, executive director Steven Wilkinson told county commissioners Monday.
The program provides weatherstripping; caulking around doors and windows; cleaning, testing, repair or replacement of heating and cooling systems; insulation; reduction of air leakage; and lighting and ventilation upgrades when needed.
“The weatherization program is really designed to work with low-income and moderate income residents,” Wilkinson said. “The process involves contacting our office. There are some automatic qualifiers, and in other cases, other qualifiers.”
Commissioner Randy Dallke asked if the program is for homeowners only, and Wilkinson said “no,” but property owners cannot have the work done and then quickly sell the property.
Households that qualify for the Low Income Energy Association Program, Supplemental Security Income or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families are automatically qualified. Otherwise, households can qualify based on income.
For a household of one, the income limit is $24,980; a household of two, $33,820; a household four, $51,500; a household of six, $69,180. Households of as many as 20 could qualify.
