Warriors wrestling starts strong

Team takes 2nd at Burlington

Staff writer

The Warriors wrestled a series of solid matches Friday, going 4-1 to take second place at Burlington’s dual tournament in the team’s first appearance of the season.

Marion defeated Central Heights 60-12, Garden Plains 59-9, Eureka 50-28, and Royal Valley 46-12. They lost to Burlington 45-27.

Coach Chad Adkins was proud of the way his team wrestled.

“We were in better shape than our opponents as a team,” Adkins said. “Our kids always wrestle very physically. We focus on that a lot.”

Ezra Darnall, Remington Putter, and Tyler Palic were undefeated for the evening. Adkins said each wrestler combined physicality with technique to win every match.

Palic also received an award for pinning his opponents in the shortest amount of time. Adkins said it took Palic a combined time of 7 minutes and 28 seconds to pin all five of his opponents.

Jarrett Johnson, Bryce Shults, Noah Albin, Charlie Nordquist, Ryan Cochran, and Adam Kjellin each lost only one match.

Adkins said he plans to add some new techniques to the Warriors arsenal. He said constant wrist control also was something the team needed to improve. However, he said he hopes wrestlers will continue to wrestle the way they did at Burlington for the rest of the season.

“I am beyond proud of these guys,” he said. “We just have to stay healthy.”

The Warriors take the mat at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Hesston Tournament.
