Warriors blow away Tornadoes

Led by Kourtney Hansen, the Marion High School girls got off to a fast start Tuesday night against Eureka and kept their feet on the gas, swamping the Tornadoes 60-23 to advance to the 3A substate semifinals.
Marion blitzed Eureka with a crushing 15-0 run over the first 4 minutes and 30 seconds of the game before the Tornadoes scored their only basket of the first quarter. Hansen had 10 points in the quarter.
Marion continued the onslaught in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to lead 35-10 at the half.
The only questions in the second half were how much the Warriors would win by, and who would they play in the next round.
Hansen scored a season high 22 points followed by Bailey Robson with 11.
Coach Kelly Robson said he loved the way the team started out running the ball.
“I felt like they would dominate Eureka,” Robson said. “The girls were loose to start the game and had a lot of fun tonight.”
Marion had only 6 turnovers while forcing Eureka into 16 miscues.
The Warriors earned a slot in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal game in Halstead against No. 2 seed Southeast of Saline, The Trojans demolished Halstead 52-24 in the opening round. Both teams enter the game with identical 16-5 records.
The Trojans beat the Warriors by 4 points earlier in the season, but Robson said he believes his team has a good chance in the rematch.
Boys out
It was a different story for the boys Monday, as they ended their season with a first-round loss to Eureka, 48-40.
The Warriors finished with a record of 9-12.
