Five capture medals

Staff writer

The Marion High School wrestling team finished fifth out of 22 Saturday at the Eureka Invitational.

Behind five medalists, including a first-place finish from heavyweight Jarret McLinden, the Warriors scored 103 ½ points.

Will Alleven finished fifth in the 113-pound class, pinning Clearwater’s Trenton Klausmeyer in 33 seconds.

Kolton Brewer also took fifth place at 160 pounds, beating Clearwater’s Chance Clark again.

After opening the tournament with a 10-4 decision over Clark, Brewer this time pinned his adversary in 1:41 for a 4-1 outing.

Todd Palic went 2-2 competing in the 170-pound class, tumbling 5-2 in the third place match to El Dorado’s Seth Hackler.

Tyler Palic is still ranked second at 195 pounds; however, Cherryvale’s fifth-ranked Colben Dodson ambushed him with an 11-1 decision in the semifinals.

Palic rebounded from the loss to take down Coffeyville’s Brandon Barrager in 2:09 for third place.

McLinden picked up his second consecutive tournament title, pinning Clearwater’s Connor Snell in 3:27 to complete a perfect 4-0 day.

Other Marion competitors were Forest Slater (2-2), Calib Mallory (1-2), Brock Mitchell (2-2), Kyle Horton (1-2), and Luke Lanning (2-2).

“It was a good meet for us, everyone came away with at least one win and we had some that added a lot more wins to their season,” Warrior coach Tyler McMichael said. “We had some matches against some guys we’ll see at regionals, so those matches will help us in seedings.

“There was only one 3-2-1A team (Caney Valley) that beat us and Burlington and Rose Hill are pretty good 4A teams.”

Up next for the Warriors is Friday’s Hoisington Cardinal Classic.
