Hillsboro
Hillsboro easily beat Nickerson 35-0 in a homecoming match-up Friday.
“Our team showed incredible discipline, execution, and determination in our win,” coach Demetrius Cox said. “It’s a result of all the hard work and dedication we’ve put in during practice and the unwavering support from our fans.”
One of the core principles for the Trojans is to get 1% better every day. After a dominating win like Friday’s, Cox said the team shouldn’t rest on its laurels.
“We must remain humble and hungry,” he said. “Our goal is to become the best version of ourselves, both individually and as a team.”
In addition to three passing touchdowns from quarterback Dawson Boldt to tight end Zander Haslett, Anders Weisbeck and Jesiah Gooch also saw the end zone Friday.
The Trojans (2-0) will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday to play Hesston (0-2).
Marion
The Warriors won their second game of the season, 19-0, on the road Friday against Sterling.
The game’s first score didn’t happen until the third quarter, when quarterback Jack Lanning ran 51 yards for a touchdown.
Lanning finished with two rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown to receiver Jonathan Frese.
“I was speechless after the game with how proud I was of our guys,” coach Shaun Craft said. “A few guys weren’t 100% but everyone played their heart out. It was just a tough, physical, old-fashioned football game.”
The first half, both teams struggled to put any points on the board. Both defenses were strong.
“We made a few adjustments at halftime, and some guys made some big time plays to finally get us on the scoreboard in the second half,” Craft said. “It was an overall team effort to get the victory.”
The Warriors (2-0) will be back on the road again this Friday playing Trinity (1-1) in Hutchison.
Centre
Centre got out to a quick start Friday in a contest at home against Southern Coffey at home.
The Cougars led 24-0 at 5:28 in the first quarter on runs by Santiago Knepp and extra-point kicks by Gentri Holub.
But the Titans came back with two touchdowns of their own to make the score 24-14. Another touchdown run by Santiago near the end of the quarter gave Centre a 30-14 lead.
The Titans had numerous penalties and turned the ball over on downs several times.
Injuries that took Knepp and quarterback Brogan Plett out of the game by the early minutes of the third quarter blunted the Cougar attack and gave advantage to the Titans. They scored three touchdowns in the quarter to take a 33-30 lead.
The Cougars came back in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from Holub to Micah Carlson to return the lead to Centre, 36-33.
The Titans had the last word, however, scoring a final touchdown to win the game, 39-36.
Centre is now 1-1 on the season.
Goessel
The Bluebirds scored in the first quarter Friday at Canton-Galva to take a lead, 8-6.
Noah Schrag hit Klay Willis on a 56-yard pass, and Jake Flaming ran in the extra points with 4:18 to play in the first period.
The Eagle defense prevented numerous attempts by the Bluebirds to convert on fourth down, and Canton-Galva led at halftime, 28-8.
With 4:26 to play in the third period, Schrag hit Eli Boden for a 27-yard touchdown, for Goessel’s only points in the second half.
Speedy and elusive ball carriers for Canton-Galva slipped through the hands of Goessel tacklers.
A Bluebird fumble in the fourth quarter contributed to another opportunity for the Eagles.
Canton-Galva defeated the Bluebirds, 62-14, and the game ended with 4:09 to play in the fourth quarter.
Goessel is now 0-2 for the season and will play Chase County, also 0-2, for the Bluebirds’ first home game of the season.
Peabody-Burns
Peabody-Burns fell to Chetopa, 46-26, at the Warriors’home opener Friday.
“For as young as the team is, they did a good job staying competitive and not giving up,” coach Eric Dutton said.
The Warriors faced a large amount of adversity Friday night with two starters not able to play. By the time the 3rd quarter rolled around, they were down two more.
“We are going to continue to work on doing the small things right and keep pushing to improve day after day,” Dutton said.
The Warriors (0-2) will be on the road Friday in Burrton (1-1).
