Students interview candidates

Staff writer

Two government students at Hillsboro High school got to play debate moderators for real.

Seniors Brody Rader and Connor Hiebert interviewed school board candidates Monday night. Their goal was to better inform the voters.

“You want them to know who they’re voting for,” Brody said.

The pair asked candidates why they wanted to join the school board, what experience they had with education and children, what they saw as the largest issues of the district, and how they would handle sensitive topics such as mask mandates.

Several candidates spoke about their experiences with fostering children, involvement with the school system as students and then as parents, and desire to improve the community.

Thirty parents listened from bleachers amid the roughhousing by a few young children banging through the gymnasium.

Government teacher Darrel Knoll, who read answers of a candidate who couldn’t be there because of COVID, said he thought the project went well.

“Especially for the first time the guys have done a project like that,” he said. “They did a nice job setting it up and coming up with questions that were relevant.”
