Sign identifies Kapaun museum

Staff writer

The Kapaun Museum at Pilsen has a new sign.

“We wanted to get a sign for a long time,” Harriet Bina said. “But things move slowly up here.”

A goal has been to keep the brick building as original as possible, which sits next to the church and formerly was its rectory.

Father Kapaun Guild of the diocese of Wichita made the metal sign, but it needed a frame and had to be installed. Museum leaders turned to local businesses to provide materials.

Marion Manufacturing made the frame. Posts came from The Building Center. Bolts came from Marion Ace Hardware.

“We try to stay local as much as we can,” Bina said.

Danny and Becky Freund of Canton along with Bina and her husband, Laverne, contributed labor to erect the sign.

“We’ve had a lot of people say they appreciate the sign,” Bina said. “The picture of Father Kapaun is the only one I’ve seen where Kapaun is smiling. It was taken after someone shot a pipe out of his mouth.”

Pilsen is expecting an influx of 42 motorcylists at 9 a.m. Saturday. They will tour the museum and church and eat a noon meal.
