Running from the law toward a marathon

County attorney tunes up for marathon at Saturday’s Run for your Momma

Legal briefs, court arguments, and administrative tasks fill Courtney Boehm’s days as county attorney, and her husband Josh and son Declan vie for time evenings and weekends.

Still, in the midst of a busy life, Boehm finds time to run. She’s training to run her first marathon.

“I run three days a week and I do a long run on Saturdays,” she said. “I have a 16-week training program and the Kansas City Marathon is Oct. 21, so I’m a couple weeks from half way.”

The Run for Your Momma half-marathon beginning and ending at Marion County Park and Lake on Saturday was the right race at this point in her regimen.

“I did the 5K the first year we moved to town,” Boehm said. “This is my first time doing the half. It was good. It was a really fun course. I kind of liked doing the gravel through the countryside.”

A steep hill on Turkey Creek Rd. leading up to the west end of the dam was a good challenge.

“It was a little surprise at the end,” Boehm said. “Most of the hills seemed to be the last three or four miles, even through the lake a little bit.”

Boehm was impressed by the support provided along the course.

“There were really a lot of volunteers,” she said. “I never felt like I was lost. There were a lot of water stations, too. It was very well run.”

Although she didn’t run on a competitive team, Boehm said she has always been a runner. Setting a goal of running a marathon has gotten her back into a routine.

“When I have a training program it’s easier to make myself get up and out,” she said.

She had a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, 2 seconds at a half-marathon Saturday. A time about twice that is her goal.

“I have some pace goals to get through it,” she said.
