Reportedly stolen Jeep crashes after 6 miles

Staff writer

A man driving a Jeep Cherokee reportedly stolen from Marion early Friday didn’t get far before being loaded into an ambulance after being thrown out of the Jeep in a crash six miles west of town.

Marion police chief Clinton Jeffrey said Zach Dvorak notified police at 4:19 a.m. Friday that a Jeep owned by his brother, Derrick Dvorak, had been stolen from the 800 block of E. Main St. and the driver fled west.

Police from Marion and Hillsboro, along with sheriff’s deputies, went looking for the Jeep, which was located by deputy Mason Hinz, overturned, in a field near the intersection of 190th and Mustang Rd.

According to Hinz’s accident report, however, the 2004 Jeep Cherokee belonged to the man driving it, Tanner L. Jasper, 19, Hillsboro, and crashed after being rear-ended on 190th Rd. by a 1996 GMC Sierra owned by Caden D. Friesen and driven by Derrick Dvorak, 24, Marion.

Hinz’s report said both vehicles were westbound, and that Dvorak told him the Jeep was traveling ahead of him with no lights when Jasper slammed on the brakes, causing him to hit the rear of the Jeep, which left the road and overturned.

Jasper was tested for alcohol and drugs. Results are pending.

Jasper was taken by ambulance to St. Francis hospital in Wichita.

Dvorak did not report injury.
