Quilt comes full circle at auction

Staff writer

A quilt purchased at the Father Kapaun Guild auction in 2013 was purchased again Sunday in the 2016 auction by the same person and may show up there again.

This phenomenon demands an explanation.

Katherine DeFilippis of Hillsboro bought the “Log Cabin Star” quilt donated by Kelly Krch in 2013. Last July, she offered it up in a raffle to raise money for her brother Brian’s medical expenses. He was battling cancer.

Katherine’s boss, Sonja Hefley, won the quilt. Sonja and her husband, John, decided to give it back to the guild to be re-auctioned.

“I was at the auction with no intentions at all to purchase it,” Defilippis said, “but when the bidding started, something happened, and I threw my hat in the ring.”

When it was over, she owned the quilt once again.

“I guess it got in my blood,” she said.

She doesn’t know what she will do with it.

“My brother died on July 21 so I’ll never have to use it again for that purpose,” she said. “I may donate it back.”

Auction organizers reported the auction was the biggest ever, bringing in close to $14,000 as of Monday.
