Pumping it up at East Park

News editor

The boom of a specialized concrete pumping truck towered high in the sky Thursday above East Park as workers poured the foundation for handball/racquetball courts, the first of many major park improvements planned by the city.

“It’s very cool,” Parks and Recreation Director Margo Yates said. “I really feel like we’re making progress.”

New sidewalks will make the park accessible for those with handicaps, and recreational improvements will include resurfaced tennis courts, new basketball goals, and playground equipment.

“The playground equipment is probably one of the last things because they still have to make it,” Yates said. “If everything plays out well, the construction company working there now hopes to knock things out pretty quickly. Probably by early fall everything will be done.”

A Community Development Block Grant is paying for all but about $22,000 of the $240,000 project.
