Public can learn about Narcan

Staff writer

The sheriff’s office, health department, and Developing Caring Communities Committed to Action will present information Dec. 17 to raise awareness about Narcan.

Narcan is a medication that rapidly reverses opioid overdoses.

It quickly restores normal breathing in a person overdosed on an opioid but has no effect on someone without opioids in their system.

It is given as a nasal spray or by injection.

Opioid drugs include heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine.

Narcan works for 30 to 90 minutes, so it’s important to call 911 so the person gets medical attention. Some overdoses last longer than Narcan works.

Narcan won’t reverse an overdose from cocaine or methamphetamine, but sometimes fentanyl is mixed into methamphetamine.

It is available without a prescription.

Lanning Pharmacy in Marion keeps Narcan behind the counter. Hillsboro Hometown Pharmacy also keeps Narcan in stock.

More information about the event is available by phone at (620) 382-4055 or by email at amy.peace14@gmail.com.
