A batty experience

Law enforcement took a spooky turn for Hillsboro police last week when officers were called to remove bats from a vehicle.
The animals were attached to a tire in the vehicle’s fender well, which was a new sight for police chief Dan Kinning.
“There are bats everywhere,” he said. “But I’ve never seen them hanging on somebody’s tire.”
Police were able to herd the bats into a box and released them in an open, dark location. Similar to other wild animals, bats can carry rabies. Keeping that in mind was a concern for officers, Kinning said.
“They are susceptible to various diseases so you never want to touch them,” he said. “We didn’t want to get bitten.”
