TO THE EDITOR

The newspaper welcomes brief letters (generally no longer than 400 words) that express an opinion on a currently newsworthy topic. The writer’s contact information must be included for verification. Letters that contain defamatory comments, open letters, third-party letters, letters sent to more than one publication, and letters that would more appropriately be advertisements, including Cards of Thanks, are unlikely to be published. One letter generally is allowed per writer per calendar month.

Overturning elections

To the editor:

In the election for governor on Nov. 8, there is really only one issue, and it’s a no-brainer.

It’s not about taxes, not about the economy, not about abortion or schools or Critical Race Theory. It isn’t about COVID, masks or vaccines. It’s about whether we want to remain a democracy in this country.

In the 2020 election, do not forget that Derek Schmidt, as Kansas attorney general, signed on to support a Texas lawsuit against Pennsylvania and three other states to overturn the results of their free, fair, and certified elections.

This went straight to the U.S. Supreme Court, where it was thrown out on lack of standing. One state has absolutely no business telling other states how to run their elections.

Kansas congressmen Tracey Mann, Jake LaTurner, and Ron Estes all voted Jan. 6 to not accept electoral votes from states that ran free, fair, and certified elections.

Anyone who supports overturning a free, fair, and certified election is an enemy of democracy.

That’s what Derek Schmidt and the others did. This is as un-American as you can get.

All the other issues don’t matter. If you don’t have a democracy, nothing else really matters.
