New principal, teacher hired

Staff writer

Contracts were approved Monday night for hiring of Travis Rodgers as Marion High School principal and Eleanor Klenda as MHS science teacher.

Rodgers has spent the last four years as assistant principal at Wichita-West. He will replace Tod Gordon, who’s set to retire at the end of the school year.

Klenda, who has been teaching science at Arkansas City, will replace Brea Campbell, who’ll return to Salina at the end of the year.

Former Warrior football coach Grant Thierolf will be back coaching again for the 2018-19 school year, this time leading Marion’s cross-country team.

In other business, the board:

  • Will allow school buses to provide transportation during Chingawassa Days.
  • Agreed to dismiss students at 3 p.m. Thursday for a forensics meet.
  • Decided that pay for the district’s driver education instructor will remain the same.
  • Heard from superintendent Aaron Homburg that the school district has remained relatively healthy despite an influenza outbreak.
