Need a trim? You may have to wait

If you are in need of a trim, you might have to wait just a little bit longer.
Salons and barber shops reopened Monday, but most owners say they are booked solid for at least two weeks — and their phones are ringing off the hook.
Robin Miles, owner of Silk Salon Spa and Boutique, sighed as she leaned against a counter Monday afternoon. After 10 back-to-back cuts, she was done for the day.
The shop is not usually open on Monday, but Miles said she opened a day early to squeeze in clients because she knew she was going to be busy.
She is booked solid for the next 2 ½ weeks, she said.
“Today I literally started at 10 a.m. and did 10 already,” she said. “My back hurts.”
But she is happy to return to work and see the affect she is having on her customers.
“Everyone is walking out feeling great,” she said. “Coming out to the salon is a feel good.”
Salons in Kansas are reopening by appointment only and are required to sanitize equipment between clients.
Mane Street Beautique owner Linda Miles Martinez, Peabody, was tired but happy Monday evening after working “solid all day” from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“The next five weeks I am booked,” she said. “I am thankful and blessed for that.”
She usually helps one client because she likes to give them added attention. So limiting the salon to one visitor hasn’t been a problem, she said.
Martinez said she had to bump her clients bookings one month – and then again as stay-at-home orders continued.
Clients who were not already booked are now calling for appointments.
“I am excited to be back open and back in the working class again instead of unemployed with no money,” she said.
Michael Darrow at Mike’s Barber Shop at 412 E. Main St. in Marion is giving himself a breather of at least 30 minutes between appointments.
“I am booked up until Saturday and I have a couple scheduled next week…so far,” he said.
Most of his customers just want “regular men’s cuts.”
A few men have tried to get walk-in cuts with him, but he knows he is not allowed to.
Not that he is complaining. After two months off, he is ready to get back to work.
“The break was nice, but this is where I belong,” he said.
