It took one second in his second game as a Warrior for Tyler Zinn, a transfer student from Olathe South, to cement a place in Marion basketball lore with an improbable catch-and-shoot 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 64-62 win Friday at Hutchinson Trinity.

Marion trailed 62-61 when Zinn’s first game-winning attempt missed as time expired, but officials ruled that Marion coach Jeff McMillin had called for a timeout before the shot.

McMillin wanted 2 seconds put back on the clock; officials gave him 1.

On the sideline near midcourt, Jack Schneider faked,then fired an inbounds pass down the sideline toward Zinn, who caught, spun, and launched the game-winning shot.

Zinn was 5-of-7 from 3-point range and scored 37 points to lead the Warriors.

The Warriors did not fare as well Tuesday against Berean Academy, losing 48-40 at Marion Sports and Aquatics Center.

Zinn contributed half the points as Marion pulled out to a 10-0 lead to open the game, but Marion went cold, scoring only one point in the second quarter before eventually closing the gap in the fourth period. Zinn, who led Marion scorers with 13, fouled out, and Marion’s rally fell short.

Girls win again in nail-biter

Marion’s girls held on for a 40-39 victory Tuesday over Berean. Marion led 40-37 with 7.5 seconds left. Berean missed a 3-pointer to tie. A putback shot was too little too late.

Kirstin Hansen and Erika Hess led all scorers with 9, followed by Kristin Herzet and Elizabeth Meyer with 8.

Friday, Marion doubled up Hutch Trinity, winning 42-21.

Hansen hit 3 of 6 attempts at 3-pointers and led Marion with 11 points. McKenzie Remmers scored 10 off the bench for the Warriors, who limited Hutch Trinity’s leading scorer to just 3 points, shooting just 10 percent.

Overall, the Warriors held the Celtics to 8 of 41 shooting.

Next up the Warriors will play host to Inman on Friday.
