MHS vaulter wins state
Freshman runner breaks 2 school records
Marion sophomore Anne Baliel snagged headlines over the weekend in Wichita with a state championship in pole vault.
She cleared 10 feet 6 inches to match Marion’s school record but was unable to reach 11 feet.
Baliel has been chasing the record all year, but will have to carry the aspiration over to next year.
Freshman Heidi Grimmett scored in each of her individual events, placing seventh in the 800 meters and fifth in the 1600 meters. She clocked a 2:26.18 in the 800 and 5:28.81 in the 1600, setting new school records in both events.
It was a combined effort overall, as the girls scored in six events and took 12th place out of 64 schools in class 2A.
The girls snagged three more medals, including Michaela Regnier fifth-place tie with 9 feet in pole vault. The girls also placed seventh in the 4x100 with a time of 52.48 seconds, and Emmy Hess was eighth in long jump with a jump 15 feet 5¾ inches.
Among the boys qualifiers, high jumper Noah Dalrymple was the lone medalist with an eighth place jump of 5 feet 10 inches.
