Marion runners place at 3A state

Emily Hague medals at 15th, Colin Williams places 57th

Warriors runners Emily Hague and Colin Williams ran against over 100 competitors in their respective races Saturday during the 3A state cross-country meet at Rim Rock Farms near Lawrence.

Hague, a junior, medaled placing 15th in the girls’ race at 21 minutes, 14 minutes, and Williams, a sophomore, placed 57th at 18:50 on a course coach Rebecca Hofer described as “a very hilly and different running experience” for Marion runners.

Hofer said Hague nervously joked with her before the race by asking if it was too late to back out, but when it came time for Hague to run, Hofer said she ran hard.

Hofer noted that she first spotted Hague in 25th place.

“Each time after that Emily had advanced one or two positions,” Hofer said. “She continued to pass competitors until the last couple hundred meters. Emily finished neck-and-neck with the 14th-place runner who barely stepped across the finish line two tenths of a second before her.”

With Hague’s good work ethic and strong running ability, Hofer expects to see Hague on the winner’s podium again next year.

Williams was excited to finish his first cross-country season with a run at state, Hofer said.

“I am so proud of Colin,” Hofer said. “Colin always worked hard and pushed himself. I believe next year he’ll be standing on the podium with a medal in hand.”
