Marion looks to state

Staff writer

Coach Judy Noller expects Marion High softball to seize its chance at a championship this year.

Last time the girls took the field, they were gearing up to best their runner-up finish at regionals when COVID-19 cut their season short.

Now in her third year with the team, Noller expects the best from five seniors who are fired up about having a chance to play.

“We expect to compete every day,” said Noller. “But we would be content to capture the league championship and go on to win state.”

Returning for Marion’s 16-member team are four All-League honorees: Jayden May, Chisholm Waner, Macy Sigel, and Laura Savage.

This past week’s wet weather canceled some early practices, which was frustrating.

“We couldn’t get out there and do what we wanted to do,” she said. “But it’s that way in spring. Sometimes you can’t get on the field because of the weather.”

Sizing up the competition is tough after a year off.

“Sterling has been a strong team in the league and so has Moundridge,” she said. “But we haven’t seen how many players will return after last year.”

Several on Marion’s softball team kept in shape during the hiatus by playing on travel teams this past summer and are coming back sharp.

“They have been playing forever,” she said. “This is their sport.”
