Marion home to be donated

Staff writer

Owners of a rental house at 135 N. Freeborn St. have donated it to the Marion City Land Bank to be sold to someone who will rehabilitate it.

City administrator Roger Holter said Roger and Cynthia Fleming, Hillsboro, read about the land bank and called him about the house. They are ready to be done as landlords for it, he said.

“It’s been a rental house in our town with a non-resident owner,” Holter said.

Holter said the 1,000-square-foot house has a detached, two car garage with alley access.

“The property condition is not pristine,” Holter said. “It is something that can be repaired.”

Holter said he took photos of the house but did not enter because he’s not sure whether tenants remain. An eviction action was on Monday’s court docket.

“It has a couple of broken windows, needs a paint job, and needs a complete cleaning,” Holter said. “My position is that this could be a nice family home.”

The land bank board accepted the property and will set a minimum price before putting the property on the market. Potential buyers must submit applications specifying what work they will do, including timelines, he said.
