Marion, county pass on tax delay

Staff writer

Neither Marion County nor the city of Marion will offer payroll tax deferments to employees.

President Donald Trump signed a memo in August directing the U.S. Treasury Department to permit employers to defer payroll taxes through the end of the year.

The Internal Revenue Service ruled that the taxes would have to be made up in 2021.

“It’s not like a payroll tax holiday, and you’d have to pay it back later,” county commission chairman Jonah Gehring said.

“I think creating a hardship at the start of 2021 would not be beneficial to employees,” Marion city administrator Roger Holter told council members Tuesday.

County clerk Tina Spencer said employees had already said they did not want their taxes deferred.
